A Simple Heart by Gustave Flaubert Study Guide
A Simple Heart by Gustave Flaubert Study Guide ââ¬Å"A Simple Heartâ⬠by Gustave Flaubert portrays the life, the expressions of love, and the dreams of a tireless, benevolent hireling named Fã ©licitã ©. This nitty gritty story opens with an outline of Fã ©licit㠩ââ¬â¢s working life-a large portion of which has been spent serving a white collar class widow named Madame Aubain, ââ¬Å"who, it must be stated, was not the least demanding of individuals to jump on withâ⬠(3). In any case, during her fifty years with Madame Aubain, Fã ©licitã © has demonstrated herself to be a phenomenal servant. As the third-individual storyteller of ââ¬Å"A Simple Heartâ⬠states: ââ¬Å"No one could have been progressively tenacious when it came to wheeling and dealing over costs and, with respect to neatness, the flawless condition of her pans was the give up on the various serving maidsâ⬠(4). Despite the fact that a model worker, Fã ©licitã © needed to suffer hardship and awfulness right off the bat throughout everyday life. She lost her folks at a youthful age and had a couple of fierce managers before she met Madame Aubain. In her adolescent years, Fã ©licitã © likewise hit up a sentiment with a ââ¬Å"fairly well offâ⬠youngster named Thã ©odore-possibly to wind up in misery when Thã ©odore deserted her for a more established, wealthier lady (5-7). Not long after this, Fã ©licitã © was employed to take care of Madame Aubain and the two youthful Aubain kids, Paul and Virginie. Fã ©licitã © shaped a progression of profound connections during her fifty years of administration. She got dedicated to Virginie, and firmly followed Virginieââ¬â¢s church exercises: ââ¬Å"She replicated the strict observances of Virginie, fasting when she fasted and going to admission at whatever point she didâ⬠(15). She additionally got enamored with her nephew Victor, a mariner whose ventures out ââ¬Å"took him to Morlaix, to Dunkirk and to Brighton and after each outing, he brought back a present for Fã ©licit㠩â⬠(18). However Victor passes on of yellow fever during a journey to Cuba, and the delicate and wiped out Virginie additionally kicks the bucket youthful. The years pass, ââ¬Å"one particularly like another, stamped distinctly by the yearly repeat of the congregation festivals,â⬠until Fã ©licitã © finds another outlet for her ââ¬Å"natural kind-heartednessâ⬠(26-28). A meeting aristocrat gives Madame Aubain a parrot-an uproarious, diff icult parrot named Loulou-and Fã ©licitã © wholeheartedly starts taking care of the feathered creature. Fã ©licitã © begins to go hard of hearing and experiences ââ¬Å"imaginary humming clamors in her headâ⬠as she becomes more seasoned, yet the parrot is an incredible solace ââ¬Å"almost a child to her; she basically adored himâ⬠(31). When Loulou bites the dust, Fã ©licitã © sends him to a taxidermist and is enchanted with the ââ¬Å"quite magnificentâ⬠results (33). In any case, the years ahead are desolate; Madame Aubain bites the dust, leaving Fã ©licitã © an annuity and (as a result) the Aubain house, since ââ¬Å"nobody came to lease the house and no one came to purchase itâ⬠(37). Fã ©licit㠩ââ¬â¢s wellbeing crumbles, however she despite everything keeps educated about strict services. In the blink of an eye before her demise, she contributes the stuffed Loulou to a nearby church show. She bites the dust as a congregation parade is in progress, and in her last minutes imagines ââ¬Å"a tremendous parrot drifting over her head as the sky separat ed to get herâ⬠(40). Foundation and Contexts Flaubertââ¬â¢s Inspirations: By his own record, Flaubert was motivated to compose ââ¬Å"A Simple Heartâ⬠by his companion and associate, the author George Sand. Sand had encouraged Flaubert to desert his regularly unforgiving and satiric treatment of his characters for a progressively caring method of expounding on torment, and the account of Fã ©licitã © is clearly the consequence of this exertion. Fã ©licitã © herself depended on the Flaubert familyââ¬â¢s long-term maidservant Julie. What's more, so as to ace the character of Loulou, Flaubert introduced a stuffed parrot on his composing work area. As he noted during the structure of ââ¬Å"A Simple Heartâ⬠, seeing the taxidermy parrot ââ¬Å"is starting to pester me. In any case, Iââ¬â¢m keeping him there, to fill my psyche with the possibility of parrothood.â⬠A portion of these sources and inspirations help to clarify the topics of torment and misfortune that are so common in ââ¬Å"A Simple Heartâ⬠. The story was started around 1875 and showed up in book structure in 1877. Meanwhile, Flaubert had faced monetary troubles, had looked as Julie was decreased to dazzle mature age, and had lost George Sand (who kicked the bucket in 1875). Flaubert would inevitably write to Sandââ¬â¢s child, depicting the job that Sand had played in the structure of ââ¬Å"A Simple Heartâ⬠: ââ¬Å"I had started ââ¬Å"A Simple Heartâ⬠in view of her and solely to satisfy her. She passed on when I was in my work.â⬠For Flaubert, the inconvenient loss of Sand had a bigger message of despairing: ââ¬Å"So is it with all our dreams.â⬠Authenticity in the nineteenth Century: Flaubert was by all account not the only major nineteenth century creator to concentrate on basic, typical, and frequently frail characters. Flaubert was the replacement of two French authors Stendhal and Balzac-who exceeded expectations at depicting center and upper-white collar class characters in an unadorned, fiercely fair way. In England, George Eliot delineated persevering yet a long way from-chivalrous ranchers and tradesmen in provincial books, for example, Adam Bede, Silas Marner, and Middlemarch; while Charles Dickens depicted the oppressed, devastated occupants of urban areas and mechanical towns in the books Bleak House and Hard Times. In Russia, the subjects of decision were maybe progressively uncommon: kids, creatures, and psychos were a couple of the characters portrayed by such authors as Gogol, Turgenev, and Tolstoy. Despite the fact that ordinary, contemporary settings were a key component of the nineteenth century pragmatist novel, there were significant pragmatist works-including a few of Flaubertââ¬â¢s-that delineated fascinating areas and bizarre occasions. ââ¬Å"A Simple Heartâ⬠itself was distributed in the assortment Three Tales, and Flaubertââ¬â¢s other two stories are totally different: ââ¬Å"The Legend of St. Julien the Hospitallerâ⬠, which has large amounts of unusual depiction and recounts to an account of experience, catastrophe, and recovery; and ââ¬Å"Herodiasâ⬠, which transforms a lavish Middle Eastern setting into a venue for excellent strict discussions. To an enormous degree, Flaubertââ¬â¢s brand of authenticity was put together not with respect to the topic, yet on the utilization of minutely-rendered subtleties, on an air of recorded precision, and on the mental believability of his plots and characters. Those plots and characters could include a b asic worker, an eminent medieval holy person, or nobles from antiquated occasions. Key Topics Flaubertââ¬â¢s Depiction of Fã ©licitã ©: By his own record, Flaubert structured ââ¬Å"A Simple Heartâ⬠as ââ¬Å"quite just the story of the dark existence of a poor nation young lady, dedicated yet not given to mysticismâ⬠and adopted a completely clear strategy to his material: ââ¬Å"It is not the slightest bit amusing (however you may assume it to be so) yet on the opposite intense and extremely dismal. I need to move my perusers to feel sorry for, I need to cause delicate spirits to sob, being one myself.â⬠Fã ©licitã © is in fact a steadfast worker and a devout lady, and Flaubert keeps a narrative of her reactions to significant misfortunes and dissatisfactions. Be that as it may, it is as yet conceivable to peruse Flaubertââ¬â¢s message as an unexpected analysis on Fã ©licit㠩ââ¬â¢s life. Right off the bat, for example, Fã ©licitã © is portrayed in the accompanying terms: ââ¬Å"Her face was slight and her voice was sharp. At twenty-five, individuals accepting her to be as old as forty. After her fiftieth birthday celebration, it got difficult to state what age she was by any stretch of the imagination. She scarcely ever talked, and her upstanding position and intentional developments gave her the presence of a lady made out of wood, driven as though by clockworkâ⬠(4-5). Despite the fact that Fã ©licit㠩ââ¬â¢s unappealing appearance can acquire a readerââ¬â¢s feel sorry for, there is additionally a bit of dim cleverness to Flaubertââ¬â¢s portrayal of how peculiarly Fã ©licitã © has matured. Flaubert likewise gives a hearty, comic atmosphere to one of the incredible objects of Fã ©licit㠩ââ¬â¢s dedication and deference, the parrot Loulou: ââ¬Å"Unfortunately, he had the tedious propensity for biting his roost and he continued culling out hi s quills, dissipating his droppings all over the place and sprinkling the water from his bathâ⬠(29). Despite the fact that Flaubert welcomes us to feel sorry for Fã ©licitã ©, he additionally entices us to respect her connections and her qualities as less than ideal, if not ludicrous. Travel, Adventure, Imagination: Even however Fã ©licitã © never voyages excessively far, and despite the fact that Fã ©licit㠩ââ¬â¢s information on topography is amazingly restricted, pictures of movement and references to colorful areas figure conspicuously in ââ¬Å"A Simple Heartâ⬠. At the point when her nephew Victor is adrift, Fã ©licitã © strikingly envisions his undertakings: ââ¬Å"Prompted by her memory of the photos in the geology book, she envisioned him being eaten by savages, caught by monkeys in a backwoods or biting the dust on some abandoned beachâ⬠(20). As she becomes more established, Fã ©licitã © gets interested with Loulou the parrot-who ââ¬Å"came from Americaâ⬠-and designs her room so it looks like ââ¬Å"something somewhere between a house of prayer and a bazaarâ⬠(28, 34). Fã ©licitã © is obviously interested by the world past the Aubainsââ¬â¢ group of friends, yet she is unequipped for wandering out into it. Indeed, even outings that take her somewhat outside her recognizable settings-her endeavors to see Victor off on his journey (18-19), her excursion to Honfleur (32-33)- frighten her impressively. A Few Discussion Questions 1) How intently does ââ¬Å"A Simple Heartâ⬠follow the standards of nineteenth century authenticity? Would you be able to discover any sections or entries that are fantastic examples

New Student Photo Series 2011 â" Post #20 COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog Today we feature more pictures submitted by incoming students. Name: Nicole Margaretten Degree Program: MIA Pinar Del RÃo Province, Western Cuba. Two boys were playing hide and seek next to their small, neon blue farmhouse. The stoic oxen and hand painted grave reminded me of The Grapes of Wrath while the giggling children capture the heart of Cuba. A plaza in La Habana Vieja, Old Havana I noticed a small boy pedaling ferociously across the plaza as I stood on the balcony of an artists studio. Quickly jumping behind a white column I waited for the perfect moment. The sky was drizzling over thousands of tiny statues. I had traveled from Tokyo to Kamakura to visit the Little Statues of Jizo. The statues pictured covered a large stone wall while thousands of smaller gray figurines filled the gardens and flowed into the walkways. Many were clothed to stay warm and lovingly surrounded by vibrant flowers and pinwheels. At first appearance the shrine resembles a magical garden, until one learns that Jizo is the patron boddhisatva of travelers and lost children. Each statue was placed by a mother who lost a child to miscarriage or abortion. Name Jaivardhan Singh Degree Program MPA-DP Location An election rally in Madhya Pradesh, India. The ratio analysis allows the investor to be able to track the performance of the company relative to its past performance and also allows the company to be compared to other companies operating in the industry (Table 3 and 4). The gross profi t margin of Sainsburys has increased from 2012 to 2016 while it has dramatically fallen for Morrisons. This means that Sainsburys has been able to cut its direct costs where Morrisons has seen an increase in its cost structure. The net profit margin for Sainsburys has also stabilized after being negative for 2015 while for Morrisons it has slowly gotten into the negative region. This shows that Morrisons has also been unable to cut down its indirect costs as compared to Sainsburys. The return on capital employed has seen a similar trend for Sainsburys while for Morrisons it has been negative meaning for every pound of capital used, the return is negative for the company. The current and liquid ratio for Sainsburys has improved over the same period while for Morrisons both these ratios have deteriorated. In terms of the industry it can be seen that 0.5 for current ratio and around 0.25 for liquid ratio are the norm in the industry. Lastly, Earnings per share mirrors the fact that is seen in the profits of the companies where the EPS for Sainsburys went to negative in 2015 before profits improved and the EPS increased. On the other hand, Morrisons has seen a persistent deterioration in its EPS which has been negative for the most recent year.Sainsburys 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 Gross Margin % 5.4 5.5 5.8 5.1 6.2 Net Profit Margin % 3. 58 3.38 3.75 -0.3 2.33 Return on Capital Employed 10.19% 9.60% 10.82% 0.57% 7.24% Current Ratio 0.65 0.61 0.64 0.64 0.66 Liquid Ratio 0.33 0.28 0.49 0.48 0.5 Gearing Ratio 36.03% 38.80% 19.86% 26.74% 19.95% PE Ratio 10.78 11.78 9.56 9.81 11.29 Dividend Yield 5.05% 4.52% 5.39% 6.68% 1.46% Earnings Per Share 0.32 0.32 0.36 -0.08 0.23 Table 3 Ratio Analysis for Sainsburys for the last 5 financial years (Source: Financial Statements of Sainsburys)Morrisons 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 Gross Margin % 7 6.9 6.7 6.1 4.5 Net Profit Margin % 5.3 5.36 4.85 -1 -4.71 Return on Capital Employed 13.41% 12.08% -1.20% -11.00% -5.07% Current Ratio 0.55 0.57 0.57 0.5 0.5 Liquid Ratio 0.21 0.21 0.2 0.16 0.18 Net Gearing 26.98% 41.43% 59.08% 63.38% 45.69% PE Ratio 10.97 9.23 10.39 16.46 22.46 Dividend Yield 3.94% 4.38% 5.06% 7.33% 6.37% Earnings Per Share GBP 0.23 0.26 0.27 -0.1 -0.33 Table 4 Ratio Analysis for Morrisons for the last 5 financial years (Source: Financial Statements of Morrisons)Economic Con ditionsGoing forward, it can be seen that the recent Brexit referendum will have an impact on the retail sector of UK. As the price performance already shows, with UK choosing to leave the European Union there is a decreased incentive for retail companies to expand into Europe and open further stores in the European region. With increased costs and red tape, it would be difficult to sustain a healthy profit margin for such companies. The next strategy would be to expand into new regions like Asia where there is a potential to increase profitability, however, the cost structure of any such move would be substantially greater and would increase the turnover of the companies without providing an equal increase in profitability. This would mean that going forward, these two companies would need to focus on cost minimization rather than revenue maximization in order to increase their profitability to be considered a viable investment.Risks AssociatedThere are different types of risks whi ch can be related to buying the shares of Sainsburys and Morrisons. Data Analysis As noted in Table 1, there were four types of quantitative data collection and five types for qualitative data. Quantitative. The quantitative data from the population-sourcing databases was used to define the demographics and subgroups being studied. The PCA performed on the teacher questionnaires resulted in a list of effective teaching factors, which was divided by the subgroup and demographic data, though this list was not included in the study. The PCA results from the student surveys created another list of effective teaching factors, which were viewed as indicators of environment in the school and classroom. This data was then included in the mixed method analysis. The student survey analysis also resulted in theâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Qualitative. Most of the qualitative data (i.e., observations and interviews) was entered into SPSS and coded using the NVivo software tool. For the interviews, the NVivo tool allowed researchers to perform PCA and identify themes and dimensions which the researchers stated they used for further investigation and analysis. For the observations, the ISTOF and QoT data was reduced using a factor analysis and a confirmatory factor analysis, then the results between the two tools were compared to identify the main factors of effective teaching. The article does not specify how data from the focus groups was captured, analyzed or utilized in the interpretation. Mixed method. The researchers used the combined ISTOF and QoT results to run a correlation analysis with the indicators identified from the student surveys. The article included a table listing the resulting six factors and the correlated indicators. This same table included three other statistical analyses as well, though the article did not explicitly state why these particular analyses were used nor interpret the meaning of these results. The NVivo tool allowed the researchers to combine analyses from the different data sets gathered, while also providing the ability to separate the results by various groupings such as the socioeconomic status of a school, teacher gender,
